Mohamed Shidiye, Kenya’s former ambassador to Botswana, has intensified his efforts in the highly competitive race for Garissa County Governor, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders during a series of events in Liboi sub-county.

Shidiye, considered one of the front-runners in the upcoming 2027 gubernatorial race, used the opportunity to connect directly with the community, focusing on youth empowerment, women’s rights, and economic opportunities.

His visit to Liboi, a region known for its vibrant and diverse community, was marked by several consultative meetings with local youth and women’s groups. These meetings underscored his commitment to addressing key issues that affect the youth and women in the region.

Shidiye, a consistent advocate for youth empowerment, stressed the importance of creating sustainable job opportunities and enhancing access to skills training to equip young people for the modern workforce.

In his town hall meetings with elders and the business community, Shidiye received endorsements from several influential local leaders, further solidifying his position as a leading candidate in the race for governor.

“We need leadership that not only listens but also actively works to implement real solutions that empower our youth and women, the backbone of our society,” Shidiye told the attendees.

One of the main pillars of Shidiye’s gubernatorial campaign is youth empowerment, particularly addressing the pressing issue of unemployment among young people in Garissa.

During his meetings, he highlighted the urgent need to develop a robust framework for vocational training, access to finance, and opportunities in emerging sectors like technology and agriculture.

“The youth are the future of this county, and they deserve the right tools to succeed. We will invest in training programmes, create partnerships with private sector players, and provide mentorship to help our young people launch careers and businesses,” Shidiye said.

He emphasised that the county’s youth, despite their potential, often face limited opportunities and resources that hinder their success.

As part of his plan, Shidiye has proposed the creation of a youth employment fund, which would allow young people to access low-interest loans to start businesses. He also aims to establish modern technical colleges to provide hands-on skills in trades such as construction, carpentry, and technology.

Shidiye’s campaign also places a strong emphasis on gender equality and women’s rights.

Recognising the critical role women play in the development of Garissa, Shidiye has outlined a clear vision to enhance women’s representation in local leadership, promote their economic participation, and ensure access to quality healthcare and education.

“We cannot achieve true development without empowering our women,” Shidiye stated. His plan includes creating more opportunities for women in both the public and private sectors, improving access to reproductive health services, and addressing the barriers that limit women’s involvement in decision-making processes.

Shidiye’s commitment to gender mainstreaming includes measures to ensure that women are represented at all levels of government, from county boards to cabinet positions. He believes this approach will not only lead to better governance but also contribute to the social and economic upliftment of Garissa’s communities.

Earlier in his visit, Shidiye took part in Idd prayers alongside Liboi residents, a gesture that further solidified his connection with the local population.

He later officiated a fundraising event for an orphanage and a madrassa in the area, emphasising the importance of social responsibility and support for vulnerable populations.

Shidiye’s involvement in these charitable activities aligns with his broader campaign goals, which include improving access to education and healthcare, as well as enhancing community-driven development projects across Garissa County.

As the race to become Garissa’s next governor intensifies, Shidiye faces stiff competition from several other high-profile candidates. Former Governor Ali Korane, who served in the role until 2022, is one of the key contenders, as is Senator Abdulkadir Mohamed Haji. Both are expected to run robust campaigns that will focus on development, security, and political stability.

Abdi Dubat, the East African Community Principal Secretary, has also expressed his intention to contest for the seat, adding yet another layer of competition.

Each of these candidates brings their own unique experience and vision for the county, making the 2027 gubernatorial race one to watch closely.

With Shidiye’s increasing engagement with local stakeholders, particularly focusing on youth and women’s issues, it’s clear that he is positioning himself as a leader who is deeply in touch with the needs of the people of Garissa.

His emphasis on youth empowerment, gender equality, and economic development is resonating with many residents, and his campaign is expected to gain significant momentum as the election approaches.

Shidiye’s rising popularity, combined with his track record in diplomacy and community engagement, makes him a formidable candidate in the race for Garissa’s gubernatorial seat.

As the campaign season heats up, it remains to be seen how the diverse field of candidates will shape the future of Garissa County.
