Marriage is a union not just between individuals but between families and communities and is a social contract with deep societal implications, Kenya’s former ambassador to Botswana, Mr Mohamed Shidiye, has said

Mr Shidiye, a front-runner in the Garissa gubernatorial race said marriage was not only paramount in societal stability, but also economic cooperation, and personal fulfillment.

Mr Shidiye said marriage is an alliance built on mutual respect, shared values, and a commitment to nurturing a lifelong partnership.

“Marriage requires a deep, unwavering commitment. It’s more than just a ceremony; it’s a partnership that demands mutual support and understanding,” he said during a wedding ceremony in Garissa where he was a guest of honour.

Mr Shidiye said newlyweds should be prepared for both the joys and the challenges that come with sharing their lives with another person.

He added that effective communication and a willingness to work through differences are crucial.

“As individuals grow and change, so too will their relationships. Couples will find that their marriage evolves with time. Adaptability and resilience are essential as they navigate through various stages of life, from career changes to raising children,” he noted.

The envoy said embracing change and supporting each other through these transitions can strengthen their bond.

He added that marriage often involves balancing responsibilities, whether they pertain to financial management, household chores, or parenting.

“Effective partnerships distribute these responsibilities fairly and address challenges collaboratively. It’s important for couples to discuss and agree on their roles and expectations early on,” he observed.

He emphasized that at its core, marriage is about providing emotional support and companionship.

“Couples should expect to be each other’s primary confidants, offering comfort and encouragement. Building a strong emotional connection helps in navigating life’s ups and downs together,” he quipped.

Mr Shidiye said marriage involves planning for a shared future, which might include financial goals, home ownership, and family planning.

He said it’s important for couples to have open conversations about their aspirations and work together to achieve their goals.

At the wedding in Garissa County, the former ambassador emphasized the values of marriage and family life, highlighting its role in fostering stability and joy.

He spoke about the importance of maintaining respect, compassion, and commitment within the union, reflecting on how these values contribute to a fulfilling marriage.

Garissa MCA, Mr. Abubakar Haji Sugow,, echoed this sentiment by describing marriage as a sign of compassion and a seal of happiness.

His remarks underscored the view that marriage is not only a personal milestone but also a public affirmation of love and commitment.
