Former Kenyan Ambassador to Botswana, Mr. Mohammed Shidiye, has called for the incorporation of Gen Z’s reformist views into Kenya’s governance structures.

In an interview, Mr Shidiye praised the youth-driven movement, which have been actively advocating against the 2024/25 Finance Bill and promoting good governance. He emphasized the need to leverage the skills and knowledge of young people to advance the nation.

“We must create more opportunities and jobs for the youth and utilize their talents for the country’s advancement,”Mr Shidiye stated.

The former envoy also addressed the pressing issue of climate change, highlighting its severe impacts on Kenyans. He urged the government to implement effective adaptation and mitigation strategies to address extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and wildfires.

Mr Shidiye, who is campaigning for the gubernatorial position in Garissa County in 2027 elections, envisions a transformative future for Northern Kenya. His campaign focuses on youth empowerment, climate action, and regional development, aiming to rectify the long-standing marginalization of the region.

Mr Shidiye’s comprehensive plan includes revitalizing the local economy by harnessing untapped resources and investing in infrastructure, education, and sustainable agriculture.

“We have the potential to turn Northern Kenya into an economic powerhouse,” he asserted, referencing the region’s arable land and resources.

A significant aspect of Mr Shidiye’s campaign is his commitment to addressing youth unemployment. With many young people in Garissa County struggling to find work, the former envoy aims to create job opportunities through public and private sector initiatives, vocational training, and entrepreneurship programs.

“Our youth are our greatest asset, yet many are languishing in unemployment. This is unacceptable,” he remarked.

Climate change remains a critical concern for Mr Shidiye, particularly given the vulnerability of Northern Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands. He promised to prioritize climate adaptation strategies tailored to the region’s needs, including reforestation, water conservation, and climate-smart agriculture.

Mr Shidiye has been actively engaging with communities nationwide, including recent visits to Wajir and Bungoma counties, to understand diverse regional needs. “Leadership is about listening to the people and addressing their concerns,” he noted.

As the 2027 elections approach, Mr Shidiye is positioning himself as a leader with a clear vision for Garissa County and Northern Kenya. His commitment to youth empowerment, climate change mitigation, and regional development underscores his readiness to lead and bring about meaningful change.
