Kenya’s former ambassador to Botswana and Garissa gubernatorial aspirant, Mr Mohamed Shidiye, has urged Garissa County residents to embrace peace and social cohesion, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Mr Shidiye, who is vying for Garissa Governor in the upcoming 2027 elections, pledged to prioritise education, healthcare, and infrastructure if elected, noting that meaningful leadership must reflect the selflessness Eid-Ul-Adha symbolises.

Mr Shidiye was speaking to different stakeholders in Garissa town after he joined hundreds of residents at Mustaqbal University grounds to mark the celebration of Eid-Ul-Adha, one of the most sacred festivals in the Islamic calendar.

Dressed in Islamic traditional attire and surrounded by community elders, youth, and religious leaders, Mr Shidiye called for unity, compassion, and reflection, key values that define the Eid-Ul-Adha holiday.

The former envoy said the festival not only commemorates the unwavering faith of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) but also reminds Muslims of the importance of sacrifice, obedience to God, and care for the less fortunate.

“Eid-Ul-Adha is a moment of spiritual renewal, generosity, and brotherhood,” Mr Shidiye told the gathering. “It is a time we re-affirm our faith and commitment to serve humanity. Today, I am proud to stand with the people of Garissa to honour that spirit.”

The event featured communal prayers, the symbolic slaughtering of livestock, and food sharing among families and vulnerable community members; practices that underscore the values of charity and equality.

The celebrations concluded with residents expressing appreciation for leaders who observe and respect the cultural and religious practices of the community.
