The power of visionary leadership in driving socio-economic change has been a key theme in recent discussions surrounding Kenya’s development.

This was especially underscored by Mr Mohamed Muktar Shidiye, Kenya’s former ambassador to Botswana, during the official launch of “Mettle of the Mind”, a book by Mohamed Abdikadir Daud. Shidiye’s remarks provided an insightful analysis of the crucial link between effective leadership and sustainable development.

Drawing from his extensive diplomatic and public service experience, Shidiye articulated a vision of leadership that goes beyond formal titles or positions.

Instead, he emphasised the importance of a leader’s ability to dream for their people, mobilise necessary resources, and, most importantly, maintain the integrity to deliver on commitments.

His statement, “Leadership is not about titles or positions — it is about the courage to dream for your people, the ability to mobilise resources, and the integrity to deliver on promises,” resonated deeply with the audience, sparking widespread approval.

A key focus of Shidiye’s address was the need for a transformative shift in leadership in regions such as Garissa, which have historically been marginalised in Kenya’s development agenda.

Shidiye argued that Garissa, like many other regions in Kenya, requires leaders who are not only strategic and selfless but also deeply committed to service. This view aligns with a growing desire among Kenyan citizens for leadership that fosters inclusivity, development, and empowerment.

The event, which also marked the political milestone of Shidiye’s candidacy for the 2027 Garissa gubernatorial seat, saw a convergence of political elites, scholars, community leaders, and youth. The endorsement of Shidiye’s candidacy was both a recognition of his leadership potential and a call for a new era of development in Garissa.

His campaign promises centred on inclusive development, water sustainability, environmental protection, educational reform, and digital transformation — all of which reflect a progressive approach to governance that seeks to address the unique challenges faced by the region.

Shidiye’s insights into governance were not limited to the Kenyan context; he also drew valuable lessons from Botswana, a country known for its robust governance structures and impressive socio-economic progress.

According to Shidiye, the principles of transparency, education investment, and inclusive policy-making that have driven Botswana’s success could serve as a model for Kenya.

He highlighted the urgency of addressing pressing issues such as youth unemployment, climate change, and infrastructure gaps, particularly in arid and semi-arid areas.

Shidiye’s emphasis on the youth as Kenya’s most important resource was a central theme in his speech. By stating, “The youth are the single most important resource we have.

If we fail to empower them, we are writing off our own future,” he reinforced the importance of equipping young people with the skills and opportunities they need to drive the nation’s growth. This message resonated particularly with the young people in the audience, many of whom are increasingly concerned about their future prospects.

The political endorsement Shidiye received from various community leaders, elders, and youth representatives further illustrated the growing grassroots support for his vision.

This support is indicative of a broader political shift within Garissa, where many are eager for change and leadership that aligns with their aspirations. The event was not merely a book launch; it was framed as a rallying cry for transformative leadership, particularly in Northern Kenya and the Horn of Africa, regions that have historically faced economic challenges.

In closing, the event served as both a celebration of Daud’s literary work and a political statement on the need for leaders who can deliver tangible, impactful change.

Mohamed Abdikadir Daud, in praising Shidiye’s remarks, noted that they captured the essence of his book, “Mettle of the Mind” — a reflection on resilience, intellect, and the power of ethical leadership in the face of adversity.

Daud’s words underscored the overarching message of the event: the importance of empathy, strategic thinking, and service-oriented leadership in times of crisis.

As the 2027 elections approach, the political landscape in Garissa appears poised for a shift, with Shidiye’s name becoming increasingly prominent in conversations about the future direction of the county.

His candidacy represents not only a political ambition but also a broader call for leadership that can transform Garissa and beyond into thriving, sustainable regions in Kenya’s socio-economic fabric.
